SC 8/71/3530
Date
[c. 1314]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Shap.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The abbot and convent request a pardon. They were collectors of the clerical fifteenth in the diocese of Carlisle, and Clifford came and by force took £25 from them to the use of the king.
Nature of endorsement
Coram domino rege.
Places mentioned
Shap, [Westmorland]
Carlisle diocese.
People mentioned
Robert de Clyfford (Clifford), then keeper of the March.
Note
Acknowledgements in the ancient deeds for money collected by the abbot and handed over to Clifford are dated in January 1310, and appear once to have accompanied this petition. The tax was granted in October 1307 and due in March and June 1308, but was beset by delays. However, as Clifford is stated to have since died, the petition must date to some point after Clifford's death at Bannockburn in 1314.
