SC 8/71/3525
Date
[c. 1300-c. 1325]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas de Shrovesburs (Shrewsbury), Burgess of Bristol; John de Long, Burgess of Bristol.
Name(s)
de Shrovesburs (Shrewsbury); de Long, Thomas; John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The petitioners request that the king will grant them letters of conduct that they are able safely to go to Scotland to recover their equipment and a part of the victuals taken from their boat that was arrested in Bristol to take the king's victuals into Scotland, and which was lost at Skinburness.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Sherburn, Bristol
Scotland
Skyrbournase (Skinburness)
[Cumberland].
Note
The petition must date to 1308 or shortly thereafter as the ship referred to in the petition is likely to be the ship that the mayor and men of Bristol were ordered to prepare and man and send to Skinburness on 10 July 1308 (CCR 1307-13, p.123). However, Bain III p.57 no.286 refers to allowances to the sheriff of Dorset and Somerset for provisions sent to Scotland via Bristol and Skinburness in 5 Edward II (1311-12). Presumably the date could be either, and a notional dating in the first quarter of the fourteenth century has therefore been suggested.
