Nature of request
Shutlyngden requests remedy and the discovery of his right and to make discussion and summon the justices, sheriff and undersheriff and other ministers present at the inquest to be examined on oath about the truth of his removal from his position as keeper, and that he may have a verdict passed by the knights and better-informed of those parts . . . He was removed following an inquest made into the matter that consisted of men of little worth and knowledge brought to Newcastle by Heton and other enemies of Shutlyngden. He had the keeping by the grant of the present bishop but he was removed on the supposition that the hospital fell void and remained so until the temporalities came into the king's hands after the death of Bishop Bury though this was not the case.

The petition is dated on the basis of the date ascribed to it by Constance Fraser (Northern Petitions, pp.192-5 (no.144)). The hospital had been granted to one Thomas de Bernolby on 27 March 1366, so the petition can be no later than that (CPR 1364-7, p.226).
