Description
Petitioners
John de Say, king's valet.
Name(s)
de Say, John
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
king's valet
Nature of request
Say requests remedy so that he is not disinherited as he was imprisoned shortly after the coronation by Faucomberg by the maintenance of Mortimer until he made a recognizance in 1000 marks to be paid within three weeks, at which time he brought a writ of elegit and had recovery of corn and land until the sum was satisfied, detaining them by this false reason.1)
Nature of endorsement
Concerning the matter of the mayhem, he should have a writ in his case.2) Concerning the recognizance which is made in place of the record, no man can undo it without cause.
Places mentioned
London.
People mentioned
William Faucomberg
Roger de Mortimer.
Note
The guard dates this to c. 1327 since the petition makes mention of the recent coronation and because the patent and close roll references refer to events relating to this petition dating to February 1327 (CPR 1327-30, p.75; CCR 1327-30, p.98). However, this petition also refers to Faucomberg's acts being committed by the maintenance of Roger de Mortimer, and such a complaint is unlikely to have been made until after Mortimer's fall in 1330.
