Nature of request
Salopesbury requests that it is ordered to the justices before whom the writ taken by him is pending to bring the first inquest made concerning the lands and tenements of Hewe for the truth of the business. Salopesbury brought a writ upon a statute merchant to make an inquisition upon the lands and tenements of Hewe as Hewe had made a recognizance in £20 to him. However, following the making of this inquisition the sheriff did not wish to deliver the lands and tenements and made another inquisition to the great damage of Salopesbury and in despite of the king.1)

William de Bodelegh was one of the sheriffs of London between Michaelmas 1315 and Michaelmas 1316, so the petition has been speculatively dated to the period when he is likely to have been involved in a case raised by a petition.
