SC 8/70/3470
Date
[1307-1309]
Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of Roxburgh.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The burgesses request that it be ordered that the will of Edward I be fulfilled concerning their estate. The king granted that the burgesses who came to the peace through the conditions of John Comyn ought to inherit their lands in Roxburgh and beyond, and an inquisition was issued to Bevercotes and others as to who should inherit. Because the late king's will was fulfilled on this estate they pleaded continually for this, but nothing has been done.
Nature of endorsement
The king intends to go to those parts soon, and when he comes he will hear their reasons and right will be done there.
Places mentioned
Roxburgh, [Roxburghshire, Scotland]
London
Carlisle, [Cumberland].
People mentioned
John Comyn
William Bevercotes, Chancellor of Scotland
John Sandale, former Chamberlain of Scotland
Adam Gordon.
Note
The petition mentions the terms of the will of Edward I, while an order to enquire into this matter was issued on 16 May 1309. Therefore the petition presumably dates between the death of Edward I and this writ.
