Reference
SC 8/70/3465
Date
[c. 1330]
Description
Petitioners
John de Roches.
Name(s)
de Roches, John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Roches requests that he have restitution for his wages and expenses for the time that he has been keeper of the Channel Islands as he has incurred great costs, and because no remembrances or accounts can be found in the Exchequer because of the long tenure of Grandison as keeper. He also requests that an order be made to the chancellor to make an extent of the islands so that the king can be answered suitably for the revenues, and Roches and his heirs are not placed in peril.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered to the treasurers and barons of the Exchequer that they search the remembrances of the Exchequer and if they find that other keepers had wages then they give Roches such wages, and if not they are to have regard to his estate and his great labour, and for the time that he has remained there, and give him reasonable wages. And also if they find no account in the remembrances of the issues of the isles that they ordain some remedy by making an extent or by another manner so that he is able to be served of the issues, and Roches be able to account and be discharged by reason.
Places mentioned
Guernsey, [Channel Island]
Jersey, [Channel Island]
Sark, [Channel Island].
People mentioned
Otho de Grauntsoun (Grandison).
Note
The petition dates to c. 1330 when allowances were made to Roches for his wages and expences. Roches was still keeper in July 1330, but no longer held the position in December of the same year (CCR 1330-3, pp.46, 85). Neither of these entries seems to address fully the matters in the petition, so it is possible that the petition may be slightly later.
