Date

Description
Petitioners
Barons of Romney.
Addressees
[King].
Nature of request
The Barons of Romney make three requests:1) They state that their town is being ruined for lack of the channel that formerly connected them to the sea, which they are now hoping to recover. They ask the King to order the Sheriff of Kent to order an inquisition, and that all those who would benefit from the recovery of this channel might contribute according to their means.2) They request a letter to the Archbishop of Canterbury to order his bailiff of Romney to promote the ordinance ordained by the people of the port for their advantage.3) They request a letter of warranty authorising them to take a certain proportion of all merchandise arriving in the town by ship and otherwise for four years, for the construction of this channel, as the good men of the town have ordained.
Nature of endorsement
[Deleted] Stephen de Penchester is to be ordered to examine the ordinance or provision which has been made, and to inquire into the other things contained in this schedule, and to send it back to the Chancellor, so that what is to be done on this can be done.[Deleted] Be it remembered that for the promotion of peace and harmony among the Cinque Ports and their barons, whose proctor is Pascal de Prim, by the same Stephen, what has been done on this is to be reported back to the King before he goes overseas, so that if anything is lacking the King can complete it.
