Reference
SC 8/70/3459
Date
[c. 1318]
Description
Petitioners
Six wives of Ripon whose husbands are hostages of the Scots for the commons of Ripon.
Addressees
King
Nature of request
The wives request remedy so that their husbands will not die in prison. Their husbands were given as hostages to the Scots so that they would not burn the town, church and liberty of Ripon, but the commons will not pay the fine leaving them to die in prison. The sheriff has been ordered to make remedy but cannot act without the archbishop, who will do nothing.
Nature of endorsement
It is to be ordered by a writ formed upon the contents in the petition to the archbishop that if the allegation is true then without delay he is to have the men of the town and liberty to be compelled to cause the men to be delivered according to the ordinance and agreement which they have made on this for their deliverance, and further process is to be made on this etc.
Places mentioned
Ripon, [West Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
Archbishop of York.
Note
The petition dates to c. 1318. Entries in the two Surtees Society volumes on Memorials of the Church of Ripon, show that the raid when the people bought off the Scots occurred in May 1318. However, the complaints of the petitioners clearly date to sometime after this, and it is possible that they date to a year or more after (Vol. I, Surtees Soc., vol. 74, (1881), p.78-9; Vol. II, Surtees Soc., vol. 78, (1884), p.83-4. CCR 1318-23, p.274, which relates to the later petition from three of the hostages now at SC 8/89/4438, notes that three of the hostages had escaped, suggesting that this petition is earlier in date. The calendar in Bain suggests a date of 1324, but this would seem too late.
