Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/70/3454
Date
[c. 1330-c. 1350]
Description
Petitioners
John de Ridwale (Ridware).
Name(s)
de Ridwale (Ridware), John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Ridwale requests a writ to certain people to enquire of 40 acres of waste which was one of many parcels of waste arrented by Richard Oysel by command of Edward I. Oysel returned that he had let the land to Ridwale's grandfather but none of the Ridwales have ever had it or alienated it, but the sheriff of Nottingham continues to charge them the rent.
Nature of endorsement
Let certain people be assigned to enquire of the things contained in the petition, and if it is found by inquisition that certain others occupy the 40 acres that they be charged of the farm for the times that they have occupied it. And if no other be found to occupy it then Ridwale should have the same lands at his will and the charge remain.
Places mentioned
Sherwood Forest
Bulwelleris (Bulwell Rise), [Nottinghamshire]
People mentioned
Richard Oysel
Thomas de Ridewale (Ridware), grandfather of the petitioner
John de [Ridewale (Ridware)], father of the petitioner.
Note
The petition is dated on the guard to c. 1330-c. 1350, but with a note to the effect that it probably dates to c. 1366, this being the date of a reference to the petitioner in the fine rolls (CFR 1356-69, p.344). Whilst this latter reference certainly proves the petitioner to be alive in 1366, it does not allow a good basis to narrow the dating as the guard has done, and the wider range is safer.
