Description
Petitioners
Abbot of Rievaulx.
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Abbot of Rievaulx
Nature of request
The Abbot of Rievaulx states that his predecessor, John de Reynton, was often sent on diplomatic missions to Scotland, both in the twentieth year of the King's father, and in his own time, and that, because he rode so hard between Scotland and London and elsewhere on these missions that he lost all his horses, the King gave him three Hainault horses in compensation. However, 40 marks are now being demanded for these horses in the Exchequer, as if Abbot John had bought them. The present Abbot asks that he might be discharged this sum, in consideration of his predecessor's labour, expenses and diligence in the King's service.
Nature of endorsement
Because it is attested before the council that the said Abbot lost several of his horses in the King's service, and that the said present King gave him the said three horses as a gift, in compensation for his horses, the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer are to be ordered to cease from the demand they are making on the said Abbot for the aforesaid reason, and to make him quit and discharged of it.
