Reference
SC 8/69/3418
Date
[1322-1327]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas le Rous, formerly Sheriff of Warwickshire and Leicestershire.
Name(s)
Rous, Thomas
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Warwickshire
Leicestershire
Kenilworth, [Warwickshire]
Burton-upon-Trent, [Staffordshire].
Nature of request
Thomas le Rous, formerly Sheriff of Warwickshire and Leicestershire, complains that when he was given custody of the expenses and issues of Kenilworth castle by writ of the great seal, of which a copy in sewn to this petition, he incurred various costs and expenses, both before it was surrendered to the king, and in garrisoning it afterwards; and that he could have no aid from the county, as all the more important people were with the King at Burton-upon-Trent at the time.
Nature of endorsement
He is to have a writ of Chancery to the Treasurer and Barons concerning the contents of the King's writ by which he incurred costs and expenses for Kenilworth castle, as the petition claims; and they are to inquire into this, into what costs and expenses, and to what amount. And if they find that it is so, then they are to make him a due allowance.
Note
Thomas le Rous was Sheriff of Warwickshire and Leicestershire between 28 October 1321 and 27 October 1322. This petition must date from between the end of his period of office and the end of Edward II's reign: probably from closer to 1322 than to 1327, to judge from the Latin endorsement.
