Reference
SC 8/69/3411
Date
[? c. 1314 - c. 1323]
Description
Petitioners
Friends of James de Ros.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The friends of James de Ros state that he and his lands are in the King's wardship during his minority, and that his lands have been delivered to the merchants of the Spini, who are making waste and destruction there, to James' harm and contrary to the Great Charter. They request a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
He is to have a writ in Chancery, of the sort that is usual in such a case.
People mentioned
James de Ros
merchants of the Spini.
Note
The writ for CIPM vol.V no.252 is dated 3 February 1311: at this point wardship is granted to Robert Darcy and William de Vaux. CPR 1307-13 p.410 is dated 8 December 1311. It would seem likely that custody was assigned to the Spini after Gilbert de Clare's death in 1314. CCR 1313-8 p.184, (an order to the Escheator beyond Trent not to intermeddle further with lands that William de Ros entered as a result of orders to the then Escheator not to intermeddle further with lands that James' father Robert held of lords other than the king, dated 3 June 1315), is probably not relevant, but it does say that James was nine in 1311 - so he would still be under age until about 1323.
