Nature of request
Richard, Bailiff of Reading, formerly purchaser of herring and dried and salted fish for Edward, Prince of Wales, the King's father, states that the Prince of Wales, for his good service, gave him his letters patent for a bailiwick of the honour of Wallingford, but that this was afterwards taken from him because of false accusations made in his absence. When the Prince returned to England for the last time, Richard sued to be allowed to reply to these accusations, and was found not guilty by those assigned to try the matter: but because of the Prince's illness and for other reasons, they did not inform him of this during his lifetime. Richard asks to be able to enjoy this bailiwick, according to the effect of the letters patent made to him, and that these letters might be confirmed.
