Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Reading.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Abbot and convent of Reading state that although by their charters they ought to have the forfeitures both of their own tenants and of the tenants of others within their franchise, they are being prevented by sheriffs and others from exercising these rights with regard to the tenements forfeited by Roger de Mortimer, Earl of March. They request a remedy, so that they might be able to have the year and waste and forfeited chattels, and the escheat of the tenements held of them, as they should by law.
Nature of endorsement
They are to show their charter, and when the charter has been shown, it is to be sent before the King. This petition is to be sent to Chancery, so that when the Chancellor has examined the charter there and called the justices of both benches, and other wise men of the King's council, and also the King's serjeants, if necessary, and when he has informed himself about the allowances that have previously been made to the said Abbot and convent in such a case, what can be done by course of the law is to be done for him, and what cannot be done is to be brought back before the King.
