Date
[1337-1338]
Description
Petitioners
People of Papworth.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The people of Papworth, which is partly in Cambridgeshire and partly in Huntingdonshire, state that William Waryn of Yelling, his son John, and Simon de Riggesby, were indicted of various felonies and trespasses before the keepers of the peace in the aforesaid counties, and that a writ was issued to the Sheriff of Cambridgeshire to arrest them. They fled into Huntingdonshire, where they have been lying in wait for their indictors and for the people of Papworth at fairs and markets, to beat them, kill them, or extort money from them. They have also attracted other malefactors to themselves, and the situation is now such that if it is not dealt with before the king goes overseas, the petitioners and the indicters will be ruined. They request a remedy and swift punishment for these malefactors, as an example to others.
Nature of endorsement
A writ is to be sent to the said keepers of the peace, to have the malefactors thus indicted attached and arrested, and if they do not have a sufficient force to arrest them, the sheriff is to be ordered to gather a force from his bailiwick, and arrest the said indicted persons, and put them in safe-keeping, without releasing them on bail or mainprise. And if they flee into another county, the Sheriff where they are found is to be ordered to deal with them in the same manner.
