Nature of request
Robert de Appelby, parson of the church of Scawby, states that he was given his church by papal provision and instituted by the Bishop of Lincoln, but that the Prior of Thornholme, patron of the church, made an appeal to the Court of Arches against this provision, which resulted in Robert's excommunication and imprisonment in Lincoln castle, despite the fact that Robert had appealed from the Court of Arches to the Court of Rome. Robert sued his appeal in the Court of Rome through a proctor, with the result that the process in the Court of Arches was quashed. He asks that he might be released, as the Archbishop of Canterbury does not wish to go against his own deed.
