Description
Petitioners
Master and brothers of the hospital of St Bartholomew, Smithfield, London.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Master and brothers of the hospital of St Bartholomew, Smithfield, state that they were founded to perform certain alms, for which their income barely suffices, and that they have lately been burdened with liveries for the King's and Queen's people living in their houses, and with payment of tenths and fifteenths and other taxes. They ask to be released from these liveries and from payment of the taxes, which they never used to pay.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer and Barons are to be ordered to provide information in Chancery if they were previously acquitted of these tenths and taxes; and when this information has been returned, if they have been quit at any time, then they are to have letters patent that they are henceforth to be quit forever, of the King's grace.
Places mentioned
London.
People mentioned
[Philippa of Hainault], Queen of England.
Note
CCR 1349-54 pp.414-415 is dated 14 March 1352. It states that a previous order to supersede collection of the tenth and fifteenth granted in the king's twentieth year (25 January 1346-24 January 1347) was ignored, so it seems likely that this petition was presented at about the time of the levying of this tax. However, a note on the guard, mentioning this reference, suggests that the petition is probably earlier, possibly from the reign of Edward II.
