Nature of request
Henry Poteman states that when he was in the King's service and his protection, with a ship carrying provisions for the prince and for John de Hastyng, and also his own merchandise, to and from Scotland, Simon Salerne of Iham came to Winchelsea on the Sunday before the Nativity of Our Lady and seized the ship and its cargo and took them overseas. He requests an inquisition into this by the Mayor, Bailiffs and other good people of Winchelsea.
Nature of endorsement
He is to go to Chancery and have a writ of inquisition; and it is to be returned before the King.

Note
CPR 1301-7 p.429 is dated 28 April 1306. The petitioner is granted protection until Michaelmas, and the attack takes place on the Sunday before the Nativity of Our Lady (8 September). The petition must therefore have been presented between then and Edward I's death.
