Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Pipewell.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Abbot and convent of Pipewell state that at the last parliament at Westminster they complained of various wrongs done them by the ministers of the Forest of Rockingham, and a remedy was granted them in Chancery: but that Robert de Veer, Keeper of the Forest of Rockingham, and the other ministers have since treated them worse than ever, including obstructing their right of herbage in the pasture of Benefield, taking large numbers of animals, including plough-oxen in distraint, and disrupting the Abbot's suit of a bill of trespass against John Hyrdman by threats. [The petition is damaged and the final complaint or complaints are unclear.]
Nature of endorsement
As the things contained in the petition are notorious, and also because of the frequent complaints that have been made before now about the aforesaid Robert, and because the council has understood that it is well known that Robert refuses to obey the King's commands that come to him on behalf of the said Abbot or of anyone else, and for the scandal that has come to the Queen's council through Robert's bad behaviour, it seems to the council that the King should order the Queen to remove Robert from his office, and have some other suitable person appointed. And certain people are to be appointed to hear and determine these complaints, and those of all others who wish to complain. And because the said Robert has refused to send the tenor of the indictment at the King's command, through various writs, in despite of the king, Robert is to be ordered by the council to have the said indictment sent before the council, and to answer to the King for his contempt. And, notwithstanding, if the Abbot finds suitable mainpernors to answer to the King for the said indictment, where and when he pleases, a writ is to be sent to Robert or to the other Keeper, to cease from arresting the Abbot and his monks and servants.

Note
CPR 1330-4 p.235 is dated 12 November 1331. CCR 1330-3 p.347 is dated 13 October 1331. It is hard to tell from the state of the petition, but the indictment mentioned might seem to be the one that features in the endorsement. In any case, this must date from around 1331.
