Nature of request
The Abbot and convent of St Peter's, Gloucester, state that most of their tenants live in Dudstone hundred, and have been so impoverished by the distraints and harsh treatment of the sheriffs that some have left their lands and others are on the point of doing so. The ask that they might be able to hold the hundred in fee, for the alleviation of their tenants, paying the king as much as the hundred ever has paid, or otherwise, according to his will.
Nature of endorsement
A writ of Chancery is to be sent to Walter de Gloucester, the King's Escheator on this side of the Trent, to inquire in person if it is to the harm etc., and to return the inquisition etc.

Walter de Gloucestre was Escheator south of the Trent between 26 May 1298 and 26 April 1311; but the inquisition ad quod damnum, C 143/119/1, is held much later, in 9 Edward II (8 July 1315-7 July 1316). A note on the guard notes this, and suggests '? 1309' without giving a reason.
