Description
Petitioners
John Pestour (Baker) of Devon.
Name(s)
Pestour (Baker), John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
John Pestour of Devon states that he purchased a carucate of land, held in chief of John de Dynham, of Thomas Mesta of Hurscott, and was peacefully seised of it for a fortnight, but that he was then disseised by John de Dynham and Thomas Davy. They also disseised him of a carucate of land of his inheritance, and took and carried off his goods and chattels; and when he sued against them they threatened him, so that he dare not approach his own country, or prosecute his suit. He requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
He is to sue at common law.
Places mentioned
Devon
Hertiscote (Hurscott), [Devon].
People mentioned
Thomas Mesta of Hurscott
John de Dynham
Thomas Davy.
Note
This petition can be dated with reference to CIPM, vol.VI, no.62 (the proof of age of John, son and heir of Joce de Dynham, dated 21 September 1316) and CIPM, vol.VII, no.462 (the inquisition post mortem for him, the writ for which is dated 20 May 1332). However, the French endorsement would suggest a date in the 1320s or later as being most likely.
