Reference
SC 8/67/3317
Date
[c. 1335]
Description
Petitioners
Richard de Peshale, formerly Sheriff of Shropshire.
Name(s)
de Peshale, Richard
Addressees
King.
Occupation
Sheriff of Shropshire
Nature of request
Richard de Peshale states that when he was Sheriff of Shropshire, William Fitz Waryn, Constable of Montgomery, held Chirbury hundred, and took all its profits: as all other farmers of the castle of Montgomery have done for the past forty years, in aid of their farm. Nevertheless, the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer have charged him with these profits in his account. He requests an inquisition into this: and if it is found to be as he says, he asks that he may be discharged of these sums.
Nature of endorsement
A writ containing the effect of this petition is to be sent to the Treasurer and Barons, that, when they have called before them the said William, and searched the remembrances of the Exchequer touching the accounts of the constables of the said castle, if they can establish by such a search or by an inquisition henceforth to be held, that the constables of the said castle have always taken the said profits, and that the said William took the profits in the time of the said Richard, and that the said Richard did not levy anything and could not levy anything, then they are to have him discharged of the said profits.
Places mentioned
Shropshire
Montgomery, [Montgomeryshire, Wales]
Chirbury hundred, Shropshire.
People mentioned
William Fitz Waryn, Constable of Montgomery.
Note
CCR 1333-7 p.224 is dated 10 May 1334, and would seem to be the result of this petition. However, Richard de Peshale describes himself here as 'jadis viscounte de Salop', but according to the List of Sheriffs, he was Sheriff of Shropshire between 3 February 1333 and 23 February 1335 and again between 28 June 1338 and 30 July 1339. This must therefore be a second petition, the first having been ineffective, submitted around 1335.
