Nature of request
The petitioners state that when they were travelling from Portugal along the coast of England, they were forced ashore once by a storm and paid customs, and then their ship was damaged in a storm off the Isle of Wight and within the franchise of Southampton, so that they were forced to abandon ship and seek help, leaving their ship at anchor with four of their companions on board. Local people then came, destroyed the ship, and stole their merchandise and equipment, some of which came ashore in the franchises of the Earl of Bedford and the Earl of Salisbury on the Isle of Wight. This was three months ago, and they have since sued to recover their goods, but the officials in those parts have not delivered anything. They request a remedy, so that they can have their goods back, into whosesoever hands they have come, and also protection and safe-conduct while they pursue this business.
Nature of endorsement
A writ is to be sent to those who have occupied the goods, that they are to restore them. And they are to be received to prove that their goods are theirs by their charters, marks or oath, according to the form of the statute made on this; and they are to have protection while they sue their business. [In a different hand] And furthermore a commission is to be made to the Sheriff of Hampshire and John Clerc of Southampton to inquire into the trespasses committed against the said merchants and, when the inquisition has taken place and been returned in Chancery, justice is further to be done to them there.
