Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Richard de Perers, knight, Sheriff of Essex and Hertfordshire.
Name(s)
de Perers, Richard
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Sheriff of Essex and Hertfordshire
Nature of request
Richard de Perers, knight, states that when he was Sheriff of Essex and Hertfordshire in the ninth year of Edward II's reign [1315-1316], he purchased various provisions and paid the wages of men at arms and foot soldiers for the war in Scotland, to the sum of £196 15s. He has various letters under the privy seal to give him an allowance for this, but the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer have refused to do anything, because they do not have a warrant by writ of the great seal. He requests a writ of the great seal to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer to pay him or to allow the sum to him on his account.
Nature of endorsement
A writ containing the effect of this petition is to be sent to the Treasurer, Barons and Chamberlains, that they are to inform themselves about the sums contained in it; and they are to pay him the sums that they can establish are due to him, according to the commands mentioned by the petition, or make him an allowance in the debts that Richard owes the king.
Places mentioned
Essex
Hertfordshire
Scotland.
People mentioned
Edward [II], King of England.
Note
Dated on the guard to 'c.1327', with reference to SC 8/159/7922 (which can be dated to 1327) and CCR 1327-30 pp.22-23 (dated 6 February 1327) & 73 (dated 6 April 1327). However, neither of these references is for the correct sum of money, and pp.22-23 is clearly in response to SC 8/159/7922. This petition is likely to date from around the same time, although perhaps from slightly later, as it speaks of the king's father 'qe deux assoille', suggesting that he is dead.Richard de Perers was Sheriff of Essex and Hertfordshire between 8 October 1314 and 29 November 1318.
