Date

Description
Petitioners
Richard de Pykeryng (Pickering).
Name(s)
de Pykeryng (Pickering), Richard
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Richard de Pykeryng states he holds a messuage in Newcastle upon Tyne, but that in the time of the King's grandfather, in time of war and before the town's walls were built, the Sheriff and the Keepers of the castle knocked the buildings down because it was harmful to the castle: so that the site has lain empty ever since, Richard has received no profit, and the king has been deprived of his rent. He requests a pardon for the arrears of this rent, and declares his readiness to pay it in future.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege et magno consilio.Certain people are to be appointed to inquire whether the buildings mentioned by the petition were knocked down by the King's ministers for the reason contained in the petition or for another reason, and how much the said messuage was worth when the buildings were knocked down, and how much the site is worth now, and how much the messuage used to render to the King, and into all other articles touching this business, and to return the inquisition in Chancery. And when the inquisition has been returned, justice is further to be done.
Places mentioned
Newcastle upon Tyne, [Northumberland].
People mentioned
[Edward I], King of England.
Note
Datable to 1327-c. 1340, from C 143/255/17, an inquisition into whether the petitioner and his wife can grant a rent in Newcastle to a chaplain, dated 14 Edward III (25 January 1340-24 January 1341), and showing that the petitioner is still alive at this date. However this petition is identical, both in form and in endorsement, to one from Richard del Haye which can be securely dated to 1337 (SC 8/51/2521), so it seems likely that it too dates from that year.
