Description

Geoffrey du Pree and Alice du Pree his wife.
Name(s)
Pree; Pree, Geoffrey; Alice
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Geoffrey du Pree and Alice [de Pree] his wife state that all tenements in Richards Castle have been able to be bequeathed from time immemorial, and that Adam du Chastel Richard bequeathed a messuage there to his son John and the heirs of his body, and in default of heirs of his body to his sister Alice, Geoffrey du Pree's wife. John, who was seised of the messuage for a long time, has now died without heir of his body, but the messuage has been taken into the king's hand because John was an adherent of Roger Mortymer of Wigmore. Geoffrey and Alice request a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Coram magno consilio (Before the great council). He is to show the evidence he has for the legacy, and the truth is to be inquired into. And when the inquisition has been returned, justice is to be done.
Places mentioned
Richards Castle, Herefordshire
Wigmore, [Herefordshire].
People mentioned
Adam du Chastel Richard (Richards Castle)
John [du Chastel Richard (Richards Castle)], son of Adam du Chastel Richard
Roger Mortymer (Mortimer) of Wigmore.
Note
Dated on the guard to 1324, on the basis of CIM 1307-49 no.694 (commission dated 30 March 17 Edward II (1324), which seems to make 1324 a likely date for this petition. The note also mentions CIM 1307-49 no.881 (commission given 11 April 19 Edward II (1326)), but notes that the petition makes no mention of any earlier inquisition. CCR 1323-7 p.481, dated 4 June 1326, specifically mentions the messuage being in the king's hands through John being an adherent of certain rebels.
