Description
Petitioners
People of Pointon in Lincolnshire.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The people of Pointon in Lincolnshire state that Gilbert de Sempringham, Lord of Sempringham and patron of their church granted the church and the chapel of Pointon which pertains to it, to his new order, and that they had a chaplain in the chapel and administration of sacraments there, until Prior William of Sempringham suggested to the Bishop of Lincoln that services be suspended there. The Bishop later reversed the suspension, the Prior appealed to the court of Rome against the Bishop and the people of Pointon, breaking previous agreements made about the arbitration of this case, and acting against the statute that no religious or other is to sue against lay people in the court of Rome or elsewhere outside the realm when he can have justice in England. [The rest of the petition is badly damaged and hard to read, but they appear to be asking that the statute be upheld, and also to complain that the Prior's actions have led to people dying without the sacraments during the recent pestilence.]

They are to sue in court Christian.
