Description
Petitioners
Hugh de Pontfreit (Pontefract).
Name(s)
de Pontfreit (Pontefract), Hugh
Addressees
King's council.
Nature of request
Hugh de Pontfreit states that Roger de Ely, one of the Sheriffs of London, maliciously claimed that he had made a recognisance for £14 according to Statute Merchant, whereas he had made no such recognisance, and that he has been long imprisoned in Newgate gaol as a result. He asks that he might be released and have a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
He is to have a writ to the Sheriffs to inform the king in Chancery about the manner and cause etc.
Places mentioned
London.
People mentioned
Roger de Ely, Sheriff of London.
Note
Roger de Ely was Sheriff of London between Michaelmas 1322 and Michaelmas 1323. The language of the petition ('Roger de Ely, un des viscountz de Loundres nadgers lui soutmyst...') is ambiguous: Roger might still be Sheriff, or it might be some years later - especially as the petitioner says that he has been imprisoned for some time.
