Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Ralph de la Pole, citizen and merchant of London.
Name(s)
Pole, Ralph
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
citizen and merchant of London
Nature of request
Ralph de la Pole states that Stephen de Abyndone, formerly Sheriff of London, and William de Wenegrave his clerk, seized a shipment of nuts from Normandy that he and other merchants were shipping, claiming that he was attempting to evade customs by passing off the goods of alien merchants as his. They then disbanded an inquest that would have found in his favour, and arranged for him to be convicted, so that he had to pay to be re-admitted to the franchise of London and to pay Stephen and William to have his goods back. He requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
He is to complain at the Exchequer and a remedy will be provided there.
Places mentioned
London.
People mentioned
Stephen de [Abyndone (Abingdon)], formerly Sheriff of London
William de Wenegrave, clerk of Stephen de Abyndone
John de Gy[missing due to damage to ms.]
John de Wenegrave, Recorder of London.
Note
Dated on the guard to 'c.1315', with reference to Stephen de Abyndone, who was Sheriff of London between Michaelmas 1314 and Michaelmas 1315: although the surname is missing due to damage to the ms, the beginning of an 'A' can be seen, and he is also apparently the only Stephen to be Sheriff of London between 1300 and 1350. But the French endorsement seems later, and the force of the address 'A nostre seignur le roi qui ore est et a son conseil' seems to suggest that this is a petition from the early years of Edward III, demanding justice which was unobtainable under Edward II.
