Date

Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Pipewell.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Abbot and convent of Pipewell state that their house is so impoverished for many years and now by disease among their beasts that the Abbot's predecessors have leased much of their lands and possessions on long leases, to avoid the dispersion of their community. A tenth granted by the clergy is now being demanded of them, which amounts to more than they can spend annually from all the lands remaining to them. They ask that they might be assessed according to the quantity of lands and goods in their possession, and no more be charged from them until the King has received the lay twentieth and other tallages.
Nature of endorsement
The King has so much need of his money that he can give them no respite.
Places mentioned
Pipewell, [Northamptonshire].
Note
Dated on the guard to '? c. 1323', with reference to the decision of the monks in September 1323 to abandon the abbey on the grounds of poverty (VCH Northamptonshire, II, p.119). However the later reference to the collection of a lay twentieth, seemingly at the same time as a clerical tenth, would seem to date the petition to either shortly after 1315 (when a lay twentieth and fifteenth coincided with a clerical tenth from Canterbury province) or shortly after 1327 (when a lay twentieth coincided with clerical tenths from both provinces).
