Nature of request
Edmund de Passelee and Margaret his wife state that Ralph de Normanville, Margaret's grandfather, whose heir she is, held by the king's charter the bailiwick of Sheriff of Rutland, for himself and his heirs. This bailiwick came into the king's hand because of the minority of Thomas, Ralph's son, at the time of his father's death, and remained there because of Margaret's minority when she succeeded. They request that justice be done for them.
Nature of endorsement
They are to show the charter in Chancery and have a writ to the Treasurer and Chamberlains of the Exchequer to search to see whether that office of sheriff came into the king's hand for that reason or another; and if another then for what reason and at what time and how and in what way. And they are to inform the king in Chancery and nevertheless the inquisitions returned in Chancery concerning the aforesaid are to be examined, so that what is just may further etc.

Dated on the guard to 'c.1316 seq.' with reference to CIPM vol. V no.566, the inquisition following the death of William de Basyng, whose lands in Rutland and elsewhere were held of the inheritance of Margaret his wife, whose mother is Denise de Normanvill: presumaby this is the first husband of Margaret the petitioner here. The writ for this was issued on 8 June 9 Edward II (1316). Further dated to '? 1318', with reference to piece 22 of E 192/1.
