Nature of request
Mary, Countess of Pembroke, executrix of the will of her late husband, Aymer de Valence, Earl of Pembroke, states that after her husband's death the king's father, on the malicious advice of Hugh le Despenser and others, occupied his goods and chattels, to the sum of £2000 and more, until she and her co-executors released them to him in exchange for a pardon for debts owed by Aymer to Edward I and Edward II. She says that these debts were for money spent by Aymer in the king's service, and that he spent much more of his own money and borrowed greatly, to the extent that she now cannot pay the debts he owes. She asks the king to assign her some suitable sum in money or goods in allowance for the goods taken by his father, so that she may begin to pay her husband's debts.
