Description
Petitioners
Saundre (Alexander) Johanssoun, merchant of Dordrecht, and other merchants of the county of Holland.
Name(s)
Johanssoun, Saundre (Alexander)
Addressees
King's council.
Occupation
merchant of Dordrecht
Nature of request
The merchants state that several ships of theirs, travelling with corn from the county of Ponthieu to Holland, were seized without reason by Thomas Hayward off Boulogne about a month ago and taken to Rye, where their corn was sold by the Mayor and Bailiffs, except for that in one ship, which remains there. A list of merchants and their losses is given. Saundre Johanssoun, on his own behalf and that of the others, requests a remedy and full restitution, in consideration of letters which he has from the Duke of Holland to the King, attesting the truth of this matter.
Nature of endorsement
A writ is to be issued under the great seal to the Constable of Dover and Warden of the Cinque Ports, or to his lieutenant, to inquire into all the goods belonging to merchants of Holland taken by the people of the Cinque Ports, and by what persons they were taken, and how, and into other circumstances. And he is to have all goods taken in this way, that he can find through such information, seized and kept safely, until he has another command from the King, informing the King and his council as soon as possible, by his letters, of what he has done in this matter. And a copy of this schedule is [to be enclosed] in this writ.By the council, of whom were together at Westminster on the last day of October in the first year etc., the Chancellor, the Bishops of Durham and of St David's, and the Keeper of the Privy Seal.
