Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/65/3221A
Date
[1312-1313]
Description
Petitioners
William de Seint Oswald (Sancto Oswaldo), clerk.
Name(s)
de Seint Oswald (Sancto Oswaldo), William
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
clerk
Nature of request
William de Seint Oswald states that, for his long service, Edward I gave him the wardenship of the hospital of Newton in Holderness, but that, because of malicious allegations made against him in the fifth year of the present king's reign by Roger de Morewode, under-bailiff of Burstwick, to Edmund de Maule, then King's Steward, the Steward had him attached and imprisoned in the Marshalsea, where he remains, without ever attempting to discover the truth; and also arranged for his own appointee to be elected to the wardenship. William is always prepared to stand to law on this, and asks that he might be released and given his wardenship back.
Nature of endorsement
It pleases the king that the parties be summoned before the council three weeks after Easter: and they are to be heard and justice is to be done to them.
Places mentioned
Newton (Newton Garth, Hedon), [East Riding of Yorkshire]
Holderness, [East Riding of Yorkshire]
Burstwick, [East Riding of Yorkshire]
Marshalsea Prison, [London].
People mentioned
Edward [I], King of England
Roger de Morewode, Under-bailiff of Burstwick
Edmund de Maule (Maulay), King's Steward.
Note
CPR 1307-13 p.465 is dated 17 June 1312, and would appear to be the appointment of the petitioner's replacement. Edmund de Maulay was Steward of the Household between December 1310 and October 1312, and between February 1313 and July 1314. As the petition says 'adonqes seneschal', and says that the allegations were made in the king's fifth year (8 July 1311 - 7 July 1312, which ties in with the date of CPR 1307-13 p.465), it was probably delivered sometime between October 1312 and February 1313. A note on the guard suggests 'most probably Jan-Feb 1313', with reference to the mention of Easter in the endorsement.
