de Lythegreins, John

King's council.
Occupation
Sheriff of Northumberland
Nature of request
The Sheriff of Northumberland makes five requests:1) He states that the Prior of Tynemouth, Lord Edmund the king's brother, Gilbert de Umframvill, and Walter de Huntercumb claim to have rights of waif in their lands: on what warrant he knows not. He asks what he should do.2) He complains that the Bailiffs of Newcastle are not permitting him to take the customary prise of wines for the castle and himself, although the prises always belonged to the castle and not to the bailiffs. He requests that this be corrected.3) He complains about the overcrowding of the king's prison, and points out that if these prisoners are delivered, the king will be enriched, but that if they are not, many of them will die in prison, to the king's loss.4) He states that the king's castle is in great need of repair, and asks that John de Vescy or some other be appointed to survey the damage and report back to the king.5) He states that when a man from the Prior or Durham's franchise, Roger de Staurier, and his sons, fished illegally in the king's waters in the Tyne when this was forbidden, and then took refuge in Newcastle, he asked the Mayor and Bailiffs to attach them. They did nothing, so he sent his sergeants to attach the malefactors: but when they had seized Roger he was rescued with force and arms by people of the town, who then let him go, despite the sheriff's protests. He asks that if it seems to the council that this trespass should be punished, that this might be done.
