Description
Petitioners
Mayor and commons of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The petitioners state that before Candlemas last the Prior of the Hospital of St John in England and his council and representatives of the Mayor and commons of Newcastle were examined before the king's council on the matter of a special assize concerning tenements in Fenham, and it was found that the Prior had corrupted this assize through bribery and through the influence of the Sheriff, who is his nephew. The council therefore ordered that there would be no writ to proceed in this assize before an enquiry had been held into these tenements. The Mayor and commons sued for a commission for this enquiry until the ninth day before Easter, when they were told to come back during parliament. They request delivery of this commission, and a writ to the justices of the assize to suspend proceedings in the meantime.
