Reference
SC 8/64/3196
Date
[c. 1328]
Description
Petitioners
Citizens of Norwich.
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The citizens request that it will be suffered for the cocket to remain in Norwich finding surety that the office will be loyally made and kept. When the staple was repealed the citizens agreed to pass their wool through Great Yarmouth but the people their did great harm to them, and if the cocket is returned there they will do all that they are able to hinder them.
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the council that this ought not to be done.
Places mentioned
Norwich, [Norfolk]
Great Yarmouth, [Norfolk].
Note
The guard comment suggests that the date for this might be c. 1328-1332, as this was the period when the staple was suspended. But it is likely that the petition dates to the earlier end of this range when Queen Isabella suspended the staple (Ormrod, The Reign of Edward III, p.191).
