Nature of request
The citizens request that they may have back the city and the liberty that was taken into the king's hand by false attestation of the sheriff. They have sued allowances in the Exchequer and requests that they can have peace until he has spoken his will on this. If the warden who the king put into the city to levy the ancient debt attermined by the king's grace at £10 per annum in instalments, and which they have always paid, levies this debt quickly from the citizens the city will be destroyed in perpetuity so they request grace.

The petition is likely to date to 1290 as details of the taking of the city into the king's hand, and of the nature of the debt referred to in this petition can be found in the Exchequer Memoranda roll for Easter term 1290, and a related petition by the same petitioners also dates to this year (E 159/63 m.11; Rot. Parl., Vol. I::p.58a (no.149)).
