Reference
SC 8/64/3179
Date
[c. 1307-c. 1316]
Description
Petitioners
King's free tenants of North Wales.
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The tenants request that they be able to sell their lands according to the usage in England so that they are relieved of their great mischief and hardship which they suffer from day to day. Because they cannot sell or give their lands according to the laws and customs of England they are greatly impoverished by the laws of inheritance.
Nature of endorsement
The king is not at all advised to do away with the ancient customs of Wales.
Places mentioned
North Wales, [Wales].
Note
The petition has been dated to 1307-16 on the guard, though it is not clear what justification is used for this dating. However, since the petition displays the hallmarks of an early fourteenth century request this span of time would seem quite plausible.
