Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/64/3159
Date
[c. 1318]
Description
Petitioners
Joan de Lassi Lacy, Countess of Lincoln.
Name(s)
de Lassi Lacy, Countess of Lincoln, Joan
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The countess requests remedy as she was assigned dower in certain lands in Wales and England from those of her husband Nicholas de Audley which lands and tenements the king by his lordship took into his own hands. Restoration has been ordered by writ but nothing has been done as the keeper has not been so commanded by the king to her great ruin . . . .
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered by a writ just as before to the escheator, and if he meets resistance he should attach the resistors; and similarly let it be ordered by a writ to Giffard who has the custody of the land of Llandovery that he should not impede the countess on her premises.
Places mentioned
Wales
Lanandevery (Llandovery), [Carmarthenshire, Wales].
People mentioned
Nicholas Daudeley (Audley), late husband of the petitioner
John Giffard.
Note
The petition dates to c. 1318 as the petition clearly follows the death of Nicholas de Audley who died late in 1316, and the writ to the escheator referred to in the petition was issued on 24 January 1317. The petition details a series of writs issued for the restoration of her dower, so a date of 1318 seems a safe estimate.
