Nature of request
The petitioners request remedy as their tenants of Ottery have withheld their rents from them and by maintenance the petitioners cannot make distraints. The tenants claim to hold land of ancient demesne though this is not the case and by that means the petitioners are without recovery and they are destitute of their sustenance. They request that the maintainers be restrained, and 6 of the tenants with sufficient warrant from the others by their letters patent be made to come before the council to answer for them and the other tenants of the things concerning the matter and wrongs.
Nature of endorsement
For peril of rebellion it seems that the effect of the exemplification that it be declared and commanded to the sheriff to aid the keeper and college and their ministers that they be able to distrain their tenants reasonably for the rents and services due and accustomed so that their ministers are not disturbed of properly fulfilling their offices by force of any evil alliance, and that they have of their declaration letters patent, and also writs to the sheriff as above.
