Reference
SC 8/63/3139
Date
[1327]
Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of Nostell
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The prior and convent request that the debt owed to them for their goods taken by the constable of the castle of Bamburgh for the safe keeping of the castle be allowed to them in the debt that they owe the king at the Exchequer.1)
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the council if it pleases the king that this ought to be done.2) The council considers this petition just, but, nevertheless, coram rege.
Places mentioned
Bamburgh, [Northumberland].
People mentioned
[William Melton], Archbishop of York and Keeper of the Wardrobe.
Note
The petition probably dates to 1327 when a writ was issued to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer to examine the accounts of the keeper and to allow the debt against that owed to the king (CCR 1327-30, pp.1-2). It is likely that this petition is earlier than SC 8/170/8451.
