SC 8/63/3135
Date

Description
Petitioners
People of Orford.
Addressees
King
Nature of request
The people request that a remedy be ordained for them as they were granted the vill of Orford in fee farm by Henry III paying £30 at the Exchequer annually for all manner of services, and with a right to mill their corn in their houses or elsewhere, but the keeper detains their corn because they do not wish to make suit to the king's mill.
Nature of endorsement
They should have a common writ to the keeper formed in their case that he should permit the tenants to mill their corn where they wish just as they and their ancestors have done, and let further process be done.
Places mentioned
Orford, [Suffolk].
People mentioned
John . . ., keeper of the king's part of Orford.
Note
If the case of a windmill erected in Orford that was drawing away suit from the king's mill in the same town relates to this petition, then the petition dates to 1323 (CCR 1323-7, p.51). However, there is some hesitancy in accepting this date as the guard comment suggests that the matter of the windmill may be subsequent to this petition. This is supported by the response to the petition that is in Latin thus suggesting a date before 1322.
