Reference
SC 8/63/3133
Date
[1332-1334]
Description
Petitioners
People of Ogbourne.
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
1) The people request remedy as Ogbourne is ancient demesne and they are wrongfully injured in many ways by the abbot who has knocked down their houses and seized their lands into his hand so that their heirs cannot enjoy their lands, beating many of them and indicting them of conspiracy and confederacy before the justices.2) They further complain that the abbot has detained for 30 years of the alms that were given by the king and his ancestors to those who wished to come and receive the alms which has been found by an inquisition before the justices.
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the council if it pleases the king to pardon them their imprisonment, and concerning the alms let as much be given to those as pertains to them for their poverty.
Places mentioned
Ogbourne St George, [Wiltshire]
Newgate, [London]
Wokingham, [Berkshire]
Salisbury, [Wiltshire]
York
Bec, [Normandy, France].
People mentioned
Abbot of Bec
Walter le Vynour
Richard de Whiliby (Willoughby), Justice
Robert Selman, Justice.
Note
The petition dates to the period 1332-1334 when an inquisition was held and 4 separate commissions of oyer and terminer were issued concerning complaints for and against the people of Great and Little Ogbourne (CIM 1307-49, no.1269; CPR 1330-4, p.299, 347, 501). As the last of the commissions issued on 16 July 1334 seems the most relevant to the petition, it possibly that the petition is later than earlier in this short period, perhaps being 1334.
