Reference
SC 8/63/3111
Date
[1391]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas Manston, esquire.
Name(s)
Manston, Thomas
Addressees
King and his lords in parliament
Nature of request
Manston requests a hearing by the council in this parliament to declare his matter as he was seised of his manor of Manston until Lovel ordered his men to enter the manor and he was ousted by force, and is unable to have recovery against Lovel.
Nature of endorsement
Let this petition be ordered into Chancery, and let a commission be made to enquire both of the matter contained in the petition and of the matter alleged by the supplicant by mouth and certified in Chancery and let justice be done there as reason demands by the authority of parliament.
Places mentioned
Manston, Dorset.
People mentioned
John Lovelle (Lovel).
Note
The petition appears to date to 1391, prompting the commission issued to examine the matter on 6 December 1391 (CPR 1391-96, p.79). Another commission, directed to an almost-identical body of individuals, was issued on 11 February 1393 (CPR 1391-96, p.238), seemingly in response to a further complaint by Manston, and a countering petition by Lovell denying the allegations (SC 8/121/6038). As this petition makes no mention of an earlier petition it seems more likely that it was presented in 1391.
