SC 8/63/3103
Date
[1309-1314]
Description
Petitioners
Madoc ap Eyonn (Eynon).
Name(s)
ap Eyonn (Eynon), Madoc
Addressees
King
Nature of request
Eyonn requests that he is able to have the land of Penal, paying the sum which he now does in preference to any other tenant, and paying as much as another for the land. His father held the land, and Eyonn held it during the king's father's time and for 13 years during the present king's reign until Eyal confiscated it.
Nature of endorsement
Let him declare his bill for it is not intelligible and if the land is free or held in villeinage from the king.
Places mentioned
Pennal, [Merioneth, Wales].
People mentioned
Robert de Eyal (Eccleshall), Sheriff of Merioneth.
Note
Madoc states that this land had been held by him himself for a total of 13 years (under both the present king and the king's father), until he was disseised by Robert de Eccleshall, sheriff of Merioneth. Eccleshall was sheriff in 1296-1300, 1302-6 and 1309-14, and thus the only period when he was sheriff during the first thirteen years of a reign was in the period 1309-14 (Petitions Relating to Wales, pp.96-7). Since Eccleshall is not described as the 'former sheriff', the petition presumably dates from within that period.
