Date
[1318]
Description
Petitioners
Philip of Mongomery (Montgomery).
Name(s)
Mongomery (Montgomery), Philip
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Montgomery requests that he be able to speak with the king of the neglect and other things concerning Berwick. The people of Berwick are bound to him in the arrears of wages, and the garrison there refuse to keep watch because the people of the town do not wish to pay their wages fully. Montgomery and his company kept watch for they saw that the town was in peril, but the people of the town had him attached at Lincoln before the king in fetters, but he was prevented from speaking the truth of the matter.1)
Nature of endorsement
He should await the will of the king, and he is to speak/plead with . . . [word illegible].2) [Illegible additional response]
Places mentioned
Berwick-upon-Tweed, [Northumberland]
Lincoln, [Lincolnshire].
People mentioned
Burgesses of Berwick.
Note
From the style of the writing this petition would seem to date to the early fourteenth century. The petition probably dates to the October parliament of 1318, as this petition may be the one noted in E 175/1/22 m.3d. As Berwick was captured in April 1318 by the Scots, a date of 1318 for this petition does not seem unreasonable.
