Description
Petitioners
Edmund de Mortemer (Mortimer).
Name(s)
de Mortemer (Mortimer), Edmund
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Mortemer requests grace and remedy as he had the custody of the body and lands of the heir of Brian de Brompton because he held lands and tenements from him by knight fee which were taken into the king's hand for land which the heir held in Shropshire from the king. He has sued for restitution as the land was not held of the crown but of the late earl of Shrewsbury, but is unable to have an answer at the Exchequer.
Nature of endorsement
He should sue at the Exchequer and the process should be viewed in the same place and let justice be done to him.
Places mentioned
Shropshire
Kinlet, Shropshire
London
Everwyk (York)
Westminster.
People mentioned
Brian de Brompton
[Robert] de Belehem (Belleme), Earl of Shrewsbury.
Note
The petition must date to c. 1300 as the petition makes mention of several dates in the details it gives in the progress of the petitioner's suit from 23 through 28th years of Edward I, so cannot be earlier than 1299. The guard comments suggest that the petitioner was dead by 1304, so providing a terminus ante quem.
