Date
[1316-1325]
Description
Petitioners
Menant de Mountocut (Montecute).
Name(s)
de Mountocut (Montecute), Menant
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Mountocut on behalf of Lescluser requests that amends will be made to them concerning Abingdon for the great damage that he has done to Lescluser and that it will be guaranteed by letters of Abingdon that they will be able to leave and return into England and bring wine otherwise he and his companions will not come and bring their goods. Lescluser agreed with Abingdon to bring 200 tuns of wine into England but when the wine was brought he seized it, selling part of it and the rest was held so long that it deteriorated, and he menaced them in other ways.
Nature of endorsement
The petition is sent to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer, and they are ordered to make full and swift justice to the merchant on the contents of the petition, and Abingdon is to be ordered on the part of the king not to cause hindrance to the merchant on pain of severe forfeiture to the king.
Places mentioned
Gascony, [France]
London
Kingston upon Hull, [East Riding of Yorkshire]
Flanders.
People mentioned
Arnold de Lescluser, Merchant of Gascony
Steven de Abyngdon (Abingdon), Butler of the King.
Note
The petition is given a range of dates 1317-1325 in the guard notes. Abingdon was actually appointed Butler on 18 July 1316, so 1316 is a more appropriate date for the start. There is no clear explanation of the terminal date, but this may be the end of Abingdon's tenure (CFR 1307-19, p.290).
